Get To Know ThermoBallTM

ThermoBall™ is a lightweight, breathable and highly compressible synthetic insulation used in several kids’ styles of jackets and bunting suits that we carry, constructed by The North Face. Available in infant to youth sizes, ThermoBall™ insulation offers superior warmth with minimal weight, even when wet. Your kids will thank you for not weighing them down!

The North Face, in partnership with PrimaLoft®, developed this revolutionary synthetic alternative to down. Unlike traditional, continuous-filament synthetic insulations, the small round PrimaLoft® synthetic fiber clusters closely, mimicking down clusters; trapping heat within small air pockets to retain warmth. The insulation achieves phenomenal warmth in cold and wet weather by maintaining loft even when wet.

Untreated down soaks with water when wet, losing its loft and thus its warmth; ThermoBall™ on the other hand is a pilled and billowy polyester, so it does not soak in water. ThermoBall™ keeps most of its loft when wet, allowing your child’s body heat to be trapped in its fibers, keeping them warmer.

As well, ThermoBall™ outerwear has a durable water repellant (DWR) treatment on its face fabric for light rain protection.

ThermoBall™ is designed to feel like down when your kids are wearing it – soft and cozy, rather than stiff. It’s comparable to down in weight, and it compresses like down when you need to stuff a ThermoBall™ jacket into a pack. There are no quills to worry about so The North Face is able to use a tightly woven fabric with silk-like threads on the inside and outside of the jacket, making it lighter in weight as well.
